Why do I need to attend Orientation?
You receive many benefits from attending Orientation. You will get to meet
faculty, staff, and administrators; speak with an academic advisor; register for
classes; spend time getting information about university services, programs, and
resources; meet other new students; learn about campus life; and catch the
Patriot spirit! Orientation is required for all new students in order to be
eligible to register for classes.
Do I have to stay for the entire Orientation?
Yes. In order to benefit from the program and register for classes, it will
be necessary to attend the entire session.
I was a George Mason Extended Studies student, and now I
will be a degree-seeking student. Will I be required to attend Orientation?
Yes. As an Extended Studies student, you were not required to attend
Orientation; however, now that you have changed your status to a degree-seeking
student, you are required to attend Orientation.
What are the Orientation activities for parents and
guests?
During our traditional two day Freshman Orientation program there is a
family program that runs concurrent to the student schedule. A brief family program is offered during the daytime
Transfer sessions ONLY. Although, we do not offer a separate family program
during the evening Transfer sessions, family members and guests are welcome. All
of our family programs offer participants the opportunity to share time with the dean of
students, representatives from University Life, and student leaders to learn
more about the opportunities at Mason and beyond.
What should I bring to Orientation?
You will need to bring a photo ID, the parking pass located in the Orientation Invitation
Brochure, a copy of your G#, any Admission Office paperwork including the Transfer
Credit Evaluation, and if you are a Transfer student an unofficial copy of your transcripts.
Do you provide overnight accommodations?
During the traditional two day Freshman Orientation, students may elect to
stay overnight. If students plan to do so, please indicate on the online
Orientation reservation form. Please know there is a fee for overnight
accommodations for students that should be paid on site. We are unable to provide overnight accommodations
for families; however, there are a
number of hotels within a five-mile radius of the Fairfax Campus. Please
click here for more information. Since the Transfer
sessions are only one day, we do not provide overnight accommodations.
Is there a fee for Orientation?
Yes. Undergraduate students enrolling for the first time are charged a $160
New Student and Orientation Fee. This fee covers the cost associated with
Orientation preparation and materials, mailings and publications, catered meals,
parking, and new student programs offered throughout the school year. This
mandatory, nonrefundable, one time fee will appear on each student’s account
upon registration for classes. The fee is assessed regardless of enrollment of
Orientation attendance.

My schedule will not allow me to attend any of the
scheduled Orientations. What should I do?
The University requires that all new students attend an Orientation session.
If your schedule will not permit you to attend one of our
sessions, please contact our office. After we receive notification from
you, you will be directed to seek academic advising on your own and will be

Student Academic Affairs and Advising have UNIV transition courses designed
to help freshman and transfer students address the issues they will face during each of these
transition periods, resulting in a successful college career and graduation with
a bachelor’s degree. UNIV has sections specifically designed for new

pre-health professional students. If you have declared a major, you are advised
in that academic department. University Career Services can guide you through
the process of exploring your major/career options. Meet with a career counselor
for help with deciding on or confirming your choice of a major. Also visit
Career Services’ website at
http://careers.gmu.edu about exploring careers and majors.
