Getting Ready for Winter Orientation

1. Set Up Your Patriot Pass and MasonLive Email

To login to PatriotWeb and view financial aid packages, transfer credits, and course registration system, you will need to follow the steps that will help you set up your Patriot Pass account. For new Patriot Pass users, the PIN is emailed to you. Once you have set up your Patriot Pass, you will use that password to set up for MasonLive email address. First time login instructions are available at This is the email address that George Mason University will use to communicate with you following orientation.

2. Register for Orientation

Three to five business days after you have paid your enrollment deposit to the Office of Admissions, you will be able to register for orientation. Registration for winter orientations will open on November 1, 2019.

New students who attend a Daytime Orientation session will have the option of registering family and guests with their online reservation. Adult guests ages 13 and up are assessed a $30 fee, children ages 5-12 are assessed a $15 fee, and children 4 and under are free. These fees cover the costs of the family orientation program including meals, space, staffing, parking, and materials. Guest fees are processed through our online reservation system. Please note that we do not offer a family program for International or Evening Orientations due to space restrictions.

All students are charged a New Student Fee upon registering for their first semester of courses.

3. Complete Patriot Preview

Complete Patriot Preview, the online component to Orientation that will prepare you to maximize your in-person experience. Students are required to complete the “Before Orientation” section at least 1 week prior to your orientation session date. You can access Patriot Preview at any time online from your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

As information is customized to your student profile, including major and special programs, you will need your G number in order to access the system. Set up a login using your G number and personally generated password.

4. Reserve Overnight Accommodations

We do not offer overnight accommodations on campus for students or guests during winter orientations. If you are traveling a long distance, we do have partner hotels in the area. 5. Submit Final Transcripts and Scores

Be sure to submit official transcripts, AP and IB scores, and any other necessary documentation to Admissions. For transfer students, you can bring a printed copy of your Transfer Credit Evaluation and/or unofficial transcripts (including any currently enrolled courses) with you to orientation for reference when meeting with your academic advisor.

6. Access Financial Aid

Following Step 1 above, access PatriotWeb to accept/decline your financial aid package. For more information, contact the Office of Financial Aid.

7. Upload Your Mason ID Photo

Make sure your Mason ID photo looks great! The Mason Card Office offers online photo submissions, which will save you time and guarantee that you like your photo. If a suitable photo is uploaded and approved, your ID card will be waiting for you at the end of your orientation session. Your Mason ID provides access to your residence hall, Mason Money for dining, library access, free entry to athletic games, and more!

8. Complete Immunization Records

Student Health Services must receive your immunization records before the first day of classes. You can bring completed copies with you to your orientation session. Failure to turn in your Immunization Records before the deadline will result in a hold on your account, which will prevent you from registering for the next semester’s classes.

In order to avoid registration delays, download and submit a copy of the Immunization Record form to Student Health Services.

9. Placement Testing

Some mathematics and foreign language courses require placement testing. During (or prior to) orientation, confirm with your academic advisor whether your program or courses require a placement test. You can find more information on placement testing here.

10. Prepare to Register for Classes

We want to make sure you know how to navigate the registration system before you enroll in classes. Prior to your orientation, view the Registration Guide for a smooth registration process.

Pre-advising is available to transfer students who have registered for orientation. Since pre-advising is offered through the academic unit you are majoring in, be sure to confirm which College/School offers your major on the list here. Please note that each department will have discretion in determining whether they will provide pre-advising outside of orientation due to capacity.
